In accordance with metapopulation theory, our model describes how colonization and extinction processes determine spatial and temporal variation in occupancy dynamics (Hanski and Gaggiotti 2004).

A single species metapopulation model was developed that is discrete, deterministic, and incorporates doseresponse curves and biotic growth rates to describe the effects of contamination on a metapopulation. Metapopulation theory provides a framework for understanding population persistence in fragmented landscapes and as such has been widely used in conservation biology to inform management of fragmented populations. However, classical metapopulation theory [Levins, R. (1970) Lect. Notes Math. 2, 75-107] ignores metapopulation structure and local population dynamics, both of which may affect demonstrate the importance of metapopulation dynamics and landscape con-nectivity for the persistence of populations in fragmented landscapes. The observation that locally abundant species tend to be widespread, whereas locally rare species tend to be narrowly distributed, is one of the most pervasive patterns in ecology (1–3).

Metapopulation dynamics may thus explain both the usual positive (Gaston and Lawton, 1990) as well as exceptional negative relationships between distribution and abundance. An important consequence of this observation is that the distributionabundance relationship itself cannot be used to test the metapopulation model, Metapopulation, in ecology, a regional group of connected populations of a species. For a given species, each metapopulation is continually being modified by increases (births and immigrations) and decreases (deaths and emigrations) of individuals, as well as by the emergence and dissolution of local populations contained within it. Modeled metapopulation dynamics. Metapopulation growth, in terms of the number of adults in the metapopulation (λ m) was mainly determined by local population processes, whereas change in patch occupancy (λ o) reflected the dispersal mode combined with seed Metapopulation dynamics are estimated in terms of wetlandscape occupancy, Ω(t), which identifies the temporal dynamics of the fraction of patches that are occupied by a focal species. The advantage of the proposed D-SPOM approach is to explicitly account for patch dynamics influencing habitat availability and accessibility for a focal species. 1998-11-05 · Metapopulation dynamics Abstract.

infected-recovered (TSIR) model for local dynamics, we propose a metapopulation model for regional measles dynamics. The model can capture all the major spatiotemporal properties in prevaccination epidemics of measles in England and Wales. Keywords: gravity models, measles, SIR model, phase difference, TSIR model, wavelet. It thus follows that adopting a landscape ecological perspective to metapopulation dynamics entails understanding how a spatial pattern, such as habitat fragmentation or heterogeneity, affects the However, we need further information on metapopulation dynamics to inform decisions on whether sites should be restored and, if so, which ones. Without this information, restoration attempts may create ecological traps that lure birds to sites at which they fail to produce sufficient surviving offspring due to predation and poor food availability (Kristan, 2003 ).
